Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Genius in Silver Lining for Unstable Lazio

The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had let in ten goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

The Campaign Unraveling?

Had their campaign coming unstitched, or was there ever any cohesion holding it together from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him publicly stated that the board had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were set to be hit with for fiscal problems. Speculation that his departure was imminent were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other first five games, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, observers have struggled to determine if they're getting better or collapsing.

Matteo's Surprising Presence

At least one man remained positive amid the chaos. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to be at Lazio during this campaign. He spent last season on loan at Parma and, at the start of the off-season, Lazio were advocating for him to extend his stay a while longer. The transfer ban forced a rethink. They were unable to weaken their team without replacements.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His Best Role

Perhaps the manager was still trying to identify the specific characteristics of his skill set. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri nevertheless spent much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
